The energy sector, and in particular renewable energies, are being profoundly transformed by the outbreak of disruptive technologies that take advantage of the massive digitalisation of assets to transform not only the design of components and systems, but our knowledge of the way they operate and the processes associated with their exploitation. The European Union has stressed that digital technologies will play a vital role in competitiveness of companies throughout the value chain, especially when it comes to meeting customer expectations in a service-oriented market.
In its overall vision, the energy system is moving towards variable and decentralised sources of energy, especially with regard to renewable energies. This trend, together with the flood of digital technologies, is breaking a series of barriers that formed the status quo in the energy sector:
Although many companies in the renewable energy value chain have taken a step forward when facing the challenges of digitising the energy sector, only two percent of the data available in the energy sector are collected, and to a large extent these data are not collected automatically. This is relevant information considering the potential impact that is expected from the use of data in very diverse aspects, not only in design and production, but also in field services and maintenance, which directly affect the cost of energy by improving productivity, reducing costs, and new advantages such as those derived from predictive maintenance. For the energy industry, digital transformation offers short and long-term solutions that make it easier for them to deal with regulatory changes and market demands, thus managing costs, availability and services with greater knowledge and foresight. Digital disruption is an opportunity but it also implies challenges and risks, as well as an acceleration in innovation that increases competitiveness, reducing the window of opportunity to join the digital transformation.
