Electrical grids are increasingly complex systems that have to provide a service to an increasing number of consumers and services (homes, companies, means of transport, etc.), and they also need to absorb the production of many distributed generation installations (like small renewable energy installations, for example). To face this growing complexity, both energy distribution companies and local governments are looking for technological alternatives.
Smart grids are a solution to this problem. These electrical grids use monitoring technology, information systems and telecommunications to give both electricity companies and consumers information to help them manage the aforementioned complex situation. The Basque Country, through the Basque Energy Board, and Iberdrola Distribución Eléctrica have developed a project called Bidelek Sareak, which involves the deployment of a smart grid in the Basque Country. Many companies and entities (including the Basque Energy Cluster) have taken part in this project, which was carried out between 2011 and 2016, with a budget of 60 million euros.
Over this period of time 230,000 smart meters were installed in the Basque Country to replace old ones, 1,100 transformation centres with remote management, supervision and automation services were configured, and three rural substations were integrated.
The smart grid deployed in the Basque Country by Bidelek has benefited both consumers and electricity companies, as well as the sector's value chain in general. Thanks to the project, the grid's operation has improved and it has been modernised by replacing old meters. The quality of the electricity supply has also improved thanks to the grid's ability to detect and isolate problems. It also enables consumers to manage their consumption and bills more efficiently, as actual meter readings are always used. Bidelek has also promoted the integration of renewable energy, cogeneration and a charging network for electric vehicles on the grid. In short, this project has helped to boost the technological development of the Basque electrical industry and implement its technology in national and international markets.
