Technological innovation and the favourable regulatory framework establish a context of opportunity to boost the value chain in the Basque Country
In recent years, solar photovoltaic energy has achieved a very prominent position in global renewable generation. China is currently the strongest market, followed by the United States, India, Japan and Vietnam, although European countries such as Germany and Spain are making strong progress.
The fall in the price of solar cells and modules has played a substantial role in increasing the competitiveness of photovoltaics compared to other sources of generation, with a reduction in the LCOE (Levelised Cost of Electricity) of around 80% in the last decade, and this downward trend is expected to continue in the coming years thanks to improvements in performance and installation costs.
The irruption of photovoltaic self-consumption as a result of cost reductions, the incorporation of storage systems and the flexibility of the regulatory framework - particularly in Spain - also opens up interesting prospects for companies in the field of distributed generation.
The Basque value chain must prepare itself for the major growth that the photovoltaic sector will experience in the energy transition process in the coming years by promoting technological innovation, improving its competitiveness and exploring new business models that will help to consolidate its international positioning.
