The biennial European Cluster Conferencetook place in Brussels on 7 and 8 May, bringing together most of the European clusters to discuss the most relevant and current issues faced by the clusters, while also looking to the future and discussing the European policies to be implemented for our organisations. The Basque Energy Cluster participated actively, coordinating and moderating the internationalisation session at the conference, and holding two intercluster project stands, ELBE EUROCLUSTER and ESECA.
The European Cluster Conference serves as a meeting point for clusters in Europe. The event was organised by the European Commission with the aim of ascertaining the interests and concerns of sectoral clusters. It was a place for these associations to offer their points of view and to network with other clusters that share the same mission and vision. The Basque Energy Cluster took the opportunity to contact new clusters and to come together to brainstorm possible future projects. The event also served as a platform to disseminate information on the activities of current intercluster projects.
On 6 May, the Basque Energy Cluster participated in a forum on European cluster projects where possible improvements to future cluster programmes in Europe and previous experiences in this type of projects were discussed at working tables.
On 7 and 8 May, the Basque Energy Cluster participated in the keynote presentations, with Christian Ketels, a global expert on economic competitiveness, strategy and cluster-based economic development, giving the opening session. Projects that the cluster is currently working on (ELBE EUROCLUSTER and ESECA) were also presented in the exhibition area of the event, keeping other clusters and participating companies up to date on the development of the project activities.
Finally, the Basque Energy Cluster coordinated the internationalisation session of the conference together with the European Commission. This session involved a panel focussing on markets in the southern hemisphere that the cluster also had the opportunity to moderate. The panel highlighted the role of clusters and intercluster projects in supporting the internationalisation of European SMEs in complex markets. Experiences were also shared on the activities carried out by the clusters in the panel in African and South American markets.
