On Friday 3 May, another meeting of the Industry Decarbonisation Forum was held, organised by the industrial clusters that make up the DCARTECH Alliance (Energy Cluster, Aclima, AFV, ClusterPapel and Siderex) in order to foster collaboration between the supply and demand of energy efficiency and decarbonisation solutions. The event, held at the EIC - Energy Intelligence Centre, brought together more than 120 representatives from 71 Basque companies and organisations.
The day kicked off with a speech by Aitor Urzelai, Director General of SPRI, who pointed out that despite presenting numerous challenges, the decarbonisation of industry also opens up new opportunities for technological development for companies in the Basque Country. Cristina Oyón, Director of Technology, Innovation and Sustainability at SPRI, then presented the status of the Net-Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster (NZBISC) initiative, which aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of Basque industry and, at the same time, promote the creation of opportunities for technological development. In her presentation, Cristina reviewed the progress made so far and outlined the areas of work that will be developed during the next phase.
This was followed by the presentation of two new initiatives to foster the decarbonisation of industry, promoted by REPSOL and IBERDROLA, SPRI's partners in NZBISC. On the one hand, the All4Zero industrial innovation hub, promoted by REPSOL along with ARCELORMITTAL, HOLCIM and IBERIA, was presented by Iñigo Ezquerra, Innovation Director of ARCELORMITTAL. On the other hand, Xabier Antiza, Head of Support to the Industrial Decarbonisation Unit at IBERDROLA, presented the Q-Zero alliance for the decarbonisation of thermal demand.
The first part of the day was devoted to the presentation of the new innovation hub for the decarbonisation of Basque industry, called the Basque Industrial Hub (BIH4C) and created within the framework of the European IS2H4C project. First of all, Nora Fernandez, Project Director at TECNALIA, described the origins of the hub in the analysis of intersectoral synergies carried out in NZBISC and explained that the BIH4C has joined three other industrial clusters in Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey in IS2H4C, "From Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity", to promote decarbonisation through the search for and implementation of energy synergies, the efficient use of resources and technological innovation. Subsequently, Asier Zubero, Climate Change Manager at SIDENOR, and Gorka Mendizabal, Head of R&D&I and Marketing at CALCINOR, detailed the innovative technologies that will be implemented and demonstrated at the industrial facilities of their companies during the project. Finally, José Ignacio Hormaeche, Director General of the ENERGY CLUSTER, presented the dynamics of BIH4C as a Working Group open to new collaborative initiatives and announced that it will be presented at the Net Zero Tech Fair in Barcelona on 6 June, in a round table format with the participation of representatives from TECNALIA, PETRONOR INNOVACIÓN, SBS and SPRI.
After the coffee break, during which attendees were able to enjoy a networking space to share their impressions, the second block of the day was followed by a discussion on various mechanisms to support the decarbonisation of industry.
María San Salvador del Valle, Senior Project Manager and Head of the National Energy Area at GLOBAL FACTOR, gave an overview of the new Energy Savings Certificate (ESC) system and pointed out that a significant increase in the volume of the ESC market is foreseen over the coming years. Cristina Oyón also described various company aid mechanisms for investments in decarbonisation, focusing particularly on the new SPRI-Basque Government aid programme for the decarbonisation of Basque industry, whose call for applications is currently open and will close on 20 June.
To conclude, Miriam Bores, Senior Consultant of the Industrial Area at GLOBAL FACTOR, reported on the new EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the new measures that will have to be fulfilled in the coming years due to the entry into force of this regulation.
