Attendees learned more about current and future stages in the EVE-driven EuropeWave and TurboWave programmes. Additionally, IDOM and CETO showcased their respective MARMOK Atlantic and ACHIEVE projects, already in the final phase of EuropeWave, just months from floating their devices in BiMEP.
On 31 December, the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) hosted another meeting of the Wave Energy Sector Forum, coordinated by IDOM, bringing together more than 30 representatives from the sector's leading players in the Basque Country.
The meeting focused on reviewing the status of TurboWave and EuropeWave, the two primary EVE-driven initiatives. Within the framework of the TurboWave project, contracts have recently been signed for four turbine technologies that have advanced to the next phase, including those developed by Basque-based ARRECIFE and IDOM. The two models which will proceed to the final phase of testing at the Mutriku wave power plant will be selected in early 2025. The EuropeWave initiative is in its final phase, with three devices selected for testing at sea: IDOM's MARMOK Atlantic, CETO's ACHIEVE, in BiMEP, and MOCEAN in EMEC.
Attendees were also updated on the progress of each project to be installed on the Basque coast. IDOM showcased the latest advances in MARMOK Atlantic, a project aimed at enhancing turbine performance. They are supported by Mondragon Unibertsitatea, in the aerodynamic design of the turbine and in wind tunnel tests, and by Tecnalia, in regard to the anchoring and rotation of the umbilical cable. Carnegie Clean Energy (CETO technology) demonstrated the latest developments of its wave converter, and also reported that, once the device is removed at the end of Phase III, they will be installing the converter for another year at BiMEP, thanks to the support of RENMARINAS DEMO, and also they will be officially setting up in the Basque Country.
AZTI then outlined the progress and results to date of the European SafeWave project, which aims to overcome non-technological barriers that could hinder the future development of marine energies, for which they have compiled and analysed environmental data collected by devices located in several European countries.
After a short break for coffee, the Basque Energy Cluster took the floor, first reviewing developments in ocean energy since the previous meeting. This was followed by an open discussion on the joint position on the draft Horizon Europe work programme. Next up, the leading events in the ocean energy sector 2024 calendar were presented, with special emphasis on Ocean Energy Europe (OEE), at which there will be a joint stand under the Wave Energy Basque Country brand. The (open and closed) support programmes in the framework of Eurocluster ELBE were also reviewed.
The Basque Energy Cluster closed the day by presenting the Talent Pool, the platform set up for Cluster members to support their headhunting activities.
